Feeling Discomfort In Your Jaw? Learn More About TMD
Have you been experiencing discomfort in your face and along your jawline after eating? Have you been waking up with unexplained headaches? These are two very common signs of a condition known as TMD, or temporomandibular joint disorder. TMD is an issue that can arise due to problems in the facial muscles and jaw joints. You may also be familiar with the term, TMJ, which stands for the temporomandibular joint. This joint is the hinge that attaches your jaw to your skull, and if it becomes misaligned, it can lead to discomfort and leave lasting effects.
TMD Symptoms
Many patients are surprised to learn they are suffering from TMD. At times, patients are misdiagnosed because they don’t realize the symptoms they are experiencing are caused by TMD and not another medical issue. For example, ear discomfort is a common sign of TMD. Patients may assume they have an ear infection and visit their primary care physician not realizing they are simultaneously experiencing other symptoms related to TMD.
Symptoms of TMD can include:
- Jaw that gets stuck and is difficult to open and close
- Clicking or popping sound while opening the mouth or eating
- Discomfort in the jaw area or aching facial pain
- Difficulty chewing and swallowing
- Headaches
Ways to Help Your Symptoms
If you are experiencing the symptoms above, we recommend scheduling an appointment. In the meantime, there are simple changes you can make to alleviate your discomfort. We suggest eating softer foods and avoiding tough or chewy foods. Be sure to cut your food into smaller bites and do your best not to open your mouth very wide. You can also massage your jaw and use a warm compress as needed. It helps to always stay relaxed. Stress and tension can aggravate TMD symptoms.
If TMD conditions are not treated, the symptoms could increase and become more severe over time. If you live in or around the Kaufman, TX area and are experiencing any of these symptoms or are interested in learning more about TMD, please contact our office today. We look forward to seeing you soon.
