Healthy Food Choices Lead To A Healthy Mouth
At Noble Oaks Dentistry, we love providing tips to our patients to help them achieve optimal oral health. One area that some patients can improve upon is their eating habits. We suggest maintaining a healthy diet and avoiding foods high in sugar and starch. With the middle of summer upon us, we know that there are many opportunities where less nutritious food choices will be tempting. It is important to remember that anything in moderation is great, but overindulgence can lead to problems with your oral health.
Nutritious Foods to Enjoy
While most of us love to indulge in sweets and treats from time to time, it is important for the main part of your diet to consist of teeth-friendly foods and drinks. Many people don’t realize that certain beverages can be just as harmful to their teeth as foods. Examples of foods to regularly include in your diet are:
- Leafy greens
- Fish
- Yogurt and cheese
- Lean proteins
- Carrots, celery, apples
- Water
Be Careful When Snacking
One of the worst things you can do for your oral health is snack throughout the day. Each time you eat, you are introducing bacteria into your mouth. Even drinking water afterwards does not remove everything from the surface of your teeth, along the gumline, and between your teeth. The overabundance of bacteria can lead to serious and recurring issues with decay. We recommend sticking to eating at meal times whenever possible. That is also the ideal time to eat desserts and other sweet treats.
We want to make sure our patients in Kaufman, TX and the surrounding areas not only get the best dental care possible but are also informed about how to keep their teeth healthy. Please call our office if you have questions or want more information on how you can achieve great dental health. We also recommend scheduling a hygiene examination appointment if it has been some time since your last appointment. We look forward to seeing you soon!
