How Often Do You Floss?
Do you floss your teeth every day? We know some of our patients do not floss daily, as we recommend. Did you know that we can tell you how often you floss during your routine appointments? Plaque buildup on and between your teeth is a great indication of your flossing habits. Read on to learn more about the problems you may experience if you do not floss daily.
Importance of Flossing
We recommend patients floss their teeth at least once a day. Even if you have an excellent brushing technique and brush your teeth thoroughly at least twice a day, you should still be flossing daily. It is easy for lingering food to remain trapped between teeth, where toothbrush bristles can’t reach. Using dental floss is necessary to get between teeth and clean along the gum line. When lingering food and bacteria are not removed from between teeth and along the gum line, it can lead to tooth decay and gum disease.
How to Floss
Do you know how to floss correctly? We know it can be tricky to figure out the proper way to floss your teeth. Our team is more than happy to explain the process the next time you are in our office. Using the proper flossing technique is important to ensure that you are not damaging your gums. You should be using gentle motions and not vigorously pushing the dental floss into your gums. When flossing, you want to take a length of floss and wrap it around both of your middle fingers so you can control a small piece of floss at a time. Making a C shape, you are going to curve the floss under the gum line of each tooth and move it up and down.
