Read on to learn more about what your mouth might be trying to tell you.
What Causes Tooth Sensitivity?
If you find yourself avoiding foods and beverages that are hot or cold because your teeth are uncomfortable, you are experiencing tooth sensitivity. Tooth sensitivity often occurs when the outer covering of the teeth, called the enamel, becomes compromised in some way. It can also occur when the nerves in the teeth become exposed or when an older treatment might need to be replaced. It is not uncommon for patients to experience tooth sensitivity following treatments such as a filling, dental crown, or root canal. We will always make you aware that you may experience tooth sensitivity following these treatments. When you experience unexplained tooth sensitivity, it may be caused by issues such as:
- Grinding your teeth
- Gum disease
- A cracked or chipped tooth
- Receding gums
- Lack of oral hygiene
- Eating highly acidic foods
Ways to Help Tooth Sensitivity
One of the best ways to help tooth sensitivity is make some changes to your oral hygiene routine. Be sure to use a soft-bristled toothbrush and gentle motions when brushing. There are also a number of toothpastes that are made for sensitive teeth.
