Jaw pain, headaches, clicking or popping sounds when chewing or yawning, ear pain, teeth clenching or grinding—these are just some of the signs associated with temporomandibular joint disorder, a.k.a. TMD, a common problem which can affect the joints that connect your lower jaw to your skull. Luckily, Dr. Jerry James can help! He is experienced in treating patients who have these and other symptoms and can provide relief for their pain.
What Causes TMD?
The cause of TMD may not always be clear in every case. People who have had facial or neck trauma or who have arthritis or another medical condition may develop TMD. However, it is very often the result of repetitive and excessive strain on the jaw caused by bruxism— involuntary teeth clenching and grinding—which can become worse in times of intense stress.
Over time, the additional strain on the jaw causes the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) to become misaligned, which in turn can cause a patient to experience pain or have problems with their bite. In some cases, the jaw can temporarily “lock” open and be painful to close. It can also reduce the jaw’s range of motion, making it difficult and uncomfortable to chew or speak.
Is TMD Treatable?
YES! Experienced dentists like Dr. James have the skills and training to help patients with TMD. After a consultation to learn about your medical history and your symptoms, Dr. James can devise a treatment plan tailored to your needs and particular situation.
TMD treatment varies from patient to patient and may include a combination of simple things you can do at home and the use of an appliance such as a night guard or a splint. In some cases, when teeth are part of the cause, restorative treatment may be needed.
No matter the case, Dr. James has the expertise to professionally evaluate your situation and treat your symptoms. Call our office today to schedule your one-on-one consultation.
