What is a Dental Crown?
A dental crown is a tooth-colored cover or cap that is permanently placed over a damaged tooth to restore its function and aesthetic appearance. It can also be used in conjunction with other treatments such as a root canal, dental implants or a dental bridge. We may recommend a dental crown to:
- Cover a tooth that is misshapen or severely discolored
- Replace a tooth with a large filling
- Strengthen a tooth with little tooth structure remaining
- Fix a cracked tooth
Dental Crown Treatment
Unlike other restorative treatments, such as a dental filling, a dental crown procedure is not completed in one visit. During the first appointment, we prepare the tooth by removing any decay and making room for the dental crown. An impression of the treatment site and the area above, below, and surrounding the area is taken to ensure the perfect crown is created. A temporary crown is placed while the permanent is being formulated. You will wear the temporary for approximately two weeks. During the second visit, the permanent crown is checked to be sure the fit and color is perfect. Once everything is ready, the crown is permanently attached.
