Do You Always Follow The Dentist’s Directions?
We will follow endless amounts of directions in our lifetime. You have to follow directions if you are heading to an unfamiliar place. Directions are necessary if you are building a toy or piece of furniture for your home. The list goes on and on. Following directions from our office before and after treatment is extremely important. Failure to do so can lead to serious complications. Read on to learn more.
Reasons It is Important to Follow Before and After Treatment Recommendations
While we would love it if our patients never needed treatments, we know that is not reality. It is important that patients follow our before and after treatment directions because failure to do so can lead to serious oral health complications. No matter the type of treatment you receive, whether it is minor or major, it is important to follow our before and after treatment directions. Some patients need to take antibiotic medication to receive dental care, while others may need to make an adjustment to long-term medication. Failure to do this can prevent us from performing the treatment. When you don’t follow our after-treatment instructions, there is a chance you may need the treatment repeated or you may experience severe discomfort.
Don’t Eat While Numb
Many treatments require the use of a numbing agent that can take some time to wear off. Although you may be hungry, it is important not to eat until you have a proper feeling in your mouth. Eating while numb can lead to an injury to the mouth. It is easy to bite your tongue, cheeks, and lips, leading to additional problems such as canker sores. It is also wise to eat on the opposite side of the treatment site until you are fully healed, unless we provide other instructions.
