Root Canal Therapy: A Way We Can Save Your Tooth
At Noble Oaks Dentistry, we do everything we can to help save your natural teeth. This is one of the reasons we are so passionate about patients maintaining their routine hygiene examinations. We are able to inspect the teeth for problem areas and signs of decay. When tooth decay remains untreated, it continues to worsen until additional treatments are needed. If the decay makes its way into the inner part of the tooth we may recommend a root canal as a way to save your tooth before an extraction is needed.
What is a Root Canal?
Our teeth have many layers. The outer layer, also called the enamel, while extremely strong, is not indestructible. When decay develops on the enamel and is not treated in a timely fashion, it continues to grow and make its way to another layer of the tooth. Once the decay reaches the interior part of the tooth, known as the pulp, a filling is no longer the method of treatment recommended, we will recommend a root canal. A root canal is the process of removing the infected pulp from the interior of the tooth, cleaning and disinfecting the root and finally sealing up the hole. In most cases the tooth structure has been compromised and the process will be completed with a dental crown.
Should I Be Worried?
Thanks to movies and television, root canals get a bad rap. Many patients assume that this procedure involves much discomfort, when in reality, the state of your oral health prior to a root canal treatment is what is causing discomfort. With modern technology and the methods we use for treatment, once the process begins, you should feel no discomfort and you can expect a quick recovery.
