This Treatment Could Save Your Tooth
While everyone would love to have excellent oral health, that is not always the case, and on occasion, we may experience tooth decay. When patients visit our office regularly for routine hygiene examinations, we are able to ensure that there are no problems with their oral health, such as tooth decay. When detected and treated early, decay can be eliminated. However, when patients don’t visit our office regularly or delay treatment, decay will continue to worsen until a more in-depth treatment is necessary. One such treatment is root canal therapy. Read on to learn more about it and why a root canal is not as intimidating as you may think.
Why Do We Recommend Root Canal Therapy?
When we initially detect tooth decay, it typically only affects the outer layer of the tooth, known as the tooth enamel. Tooth decay does not heal on its own and will continue to progress and worsen, moving to the inside of the tooth and affecting the tooth root. When the pulp inside the tooth root becomes infected, we will recommend a treatment known as root canal therapy.
Root canal therapy is a more involved filling treatment. It involves opening the tooth, removing the infected pulp, thoroughly cleaning and sanitizing the root canal system, inserting a filling into the tooth root, and sealing the area. After receiving root canal therapy, most patients need an artificial tooth structure, such as a dental crown.
In movies and television, root canal therapy is depicted as a treatment that leaves patients in severe discomfort, while the opposite is typically true. When patients see us to receive a root canal, they are in pain due to the infection and inflammation inside the tooth root. After we complete treatment, the vast majority of patients feel immediate relief and do not experience any complications.
If we recommend a root canal or you are experiencing discomfort, please call our office, which is located in Kaufman, TX, to schedule an appointment. Delaying a root canal or other treatment can lead to serious oral health complications. We want to help restore your oral health!
