What Do You Know About TMD?
Do you often experience unexplained jaw and facial discomfort? Or do you often wake in the morning with a headache before you even start the day? It is not uncommon to experience these issues from time to time, but if you are experiencing issues regularly, there is a chance you may be suffering from a common condition known as TMD. Thankfully, I offer treatment options to help improve and eliminate your symptoms. Continue reading to learn more about this condition and the importance of receiving treatment.
What is TMD?
TMD is a chronic issue that affects the face muscles and the joint that connects your jawbone to your skull. Unfortunately, many people who suffer from TMD, also known as temporomandibular joint disorder, remain undiagnosed. There are many symptoms that are common with TMD, and they can mimic symptoms of other conditions. It is not uncommon for patients to visit other medical practices and receive an incorrect diagnosis. TMD symptoms can include:
- Frequent headaches
- Jaw pain and facial discomfort
- Difficulty chewing and swallowing
- Jaw that feels stuck
- Ear discomfort or ringing in the ears
Importance of Treating TMD
Since so many patients remain undiagnosed, there is a large percentage of those suffering from TMD who are not receiving treatment. Untreated TMD can negatively impact your quality of life. It can be difficult to eat many foods or open your mouth wide for dental cleanings and treatments, and some people have difficulty speaking.
