Is Your Breath Getting You Down?
Do you find yourself stepping away when you speak closely with someone because of the smell of your breath? Or do you find yourself constantly reaching for mint gum because you know you have bad breath? Bad breath is something we all experience from time to time, especially after a large cup of coffee or a meal full of garlic and onions. For most of us, once we thoroughly brush and floss our teeth, our breath is back to being fresh. The problem arises when you have unexplained, recurring bad breath. Frequent bad breath is a sign there is a problem in your mouth.
Causes of Bad Breath
When food or drink choices are not the cause of bad breath, there has to be another culprit. Bad breath can be caused by:
Poor Oral Hygiene
Each time we eat, food particles remain in the mouth. This is one of the main reasons we stress the importance of brushing thoroughly for two minutes twice a day. Using dental floss daily is also imperative to ensure that trapped food between the teeth is removed. If food is trapped between the teeth and along the gumline, it can cause bad breath.
Tooth Decay
Decay that remains untreated for an extended period of time can also cause an odor. This is one one of the many reasons we encourage patients to be diligent in scheduling any recommended treatments.
Gum Disease
There are not many warning signs to alert patients they may be suffering from gum disease. Recurring bad breath is one of the few warning signs that could be indicating the development of gum disease. When bacteria and plaque build up along the gumline and between teeth it can lead to serious inflammation problems.
